One of the most famous games in the video games world is Epic games. Tim Sweeney is the CEO of this company and has become one of the greatest names in this world of fantasy. All the thanks should be given to the success of the Fortnite, which has become one of the top revenue grossing games for Epic games.
Tim was the speaker of the annual DICE summit and in this summit, he expressed his thoughts saying that the gaming industry should remain away from politics.
Later after his speech, he came to twitter and elaborated on his thoughts as he just wanted to say that politics if being used in a game as a creative part is fine but it should not be done as marketing. He further said that the game owner should make a platform that is neutral for every customer and employee.
How Sweeney touch more hot buttons?
According to Sweeney, marketers start giving free products when games are launched. While some of them get access to these products others don’t. According to him, everyone should be given equal opportunity and products in a game. It is not a good deal to provide free loot and more advanced weapons to half of them and thinking that people would enjoy being butchered in a game.
He also added that the gaming industry needs to create a wall or guard of their own and not provide free stuff at the cost of someone’s privacy and freedom as Google and Facebook do.
Blaming Facebook and Google directly however is not considered a good speech as this may lead to any further problems.
However, the most viral comment he made was that the “gaming industry should take away marketing from politics.” He added that we live in a world where our political decisions are involved in going to a restaurant for food. The gaming should not be like this, it should be neutral and we should not bring such topics in gaming.
Sweeney also said that all these may seem confusing but we should keep a separate distance from church and state, employees, companies, and customers. All of them should be given a free choice to express their feelings and what they want to say and therefore, every gaming platform should be neutral on this.
We are nobody to intervene in someone’s else thinking, and rights.
Epic Games and Hong Kong Protest
In Oct. 2019, A Hearthstone player shouted a statement associated with Hong Kong protesters while in the Blizzard. A lot of people started raising voice to ban that player and then Epic games statement came that it is not going to ban players or content creators from the games for political speech.
According to Epic games, everyone has the right to speak and express their feelings and therefore, they won’t stop people from expressing themselves.
However, soon after this Blizzard banned HearthStone player, Ng “Blitzchung” Wai Chung from any further participation on tournaments for a year and blizzard even withhold the prize money that he was going to receive and amounted for $10,000.
After the ban, Blitzchung said to InvenGlobal that he gave a lot of his efforts on the social movement and could not focus on preparing for the Grandmaster match. He further added that he knew what his actions can cause to his life. This speech wile streaming was a foolish action which he did and it has even brought his life at risk.
Blizzard says it’s also terminated its arrangement with the 2 casters that were interviewing the rival. Though they seemed to conceal their faces because he voiced his aid one Twitter user asserted the two had egged Blitzchung on, encouraging him to “Say the eight words then we will finish the meeting immediately.”
Wrapping it Up
There would be people wo would not well agree with Tim Sweeney’s words but it is quite clear that the things he told are of great importance. There should be freedom to speak and express one’s feelings and the gaming industry should not ban people or users based on his religious or political beliefs.
There should be certain limitations but as the online gaming streaming should not do as Blizzard did. Tim is quite clear that politics in gaming is fine but this industry should not move towards politics and be neutral for everyone.
The decision taken by Blizzard against Blitzchung” Wai Chung was not neutral and it should certainly be not repeated with any other player. His $10000 was also withheld which has nothing to do with what he spoke.…
